Reviews & Opinions
DOGTOWNE, MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL #43, DECEMBER 1986: The funniest thrash band from New Jersey have cooked up a sheer fireball of a second LP. Some of these tunes rip so fast I thought I was listening to some foreign release -- couldn't really make out the words, y'see. My only trouble is deciding which is funnier, the traditional' song "Surfin' Jew" or the blazin' cover of the Masterpiece Theatre theme.
IRA ROBBINS, THE TROUSER PRESS RECORD GUIDE, 1991: The improved studio sound of Humungusfungusamongus, which opens with another monster movie instrumental ("A.O.D. vs. Son of Godzilla"), allows the warp-speed quartet to vent their wits and expanding musical imagination with greater clarity than ever before. "Fishin' Musician," "Pope on a Rope," "Bugs" and "The Nice Song (In the Key of D)" all put a full-frontal guitar assault to semi-clever lyrics. But A.O.D. has other ideas: "Masterpiece" gives punks their own version of the theme music from PBS's Masterpiece Theatre (composed in 1729 by J.J. Mouret!), while "Pizza-n-Beer" changes gears entirely for all-percussion instrumentation. Above-average hardcore for suburban smartasses.
