ADMIT YOU'RE SHIT
Formed: London, England, UK
The 7” EP from this British quartet features a toothless version of Minor Threat’s ‘In My Eyes’ and five other not-very-well-played thrash-outs, and an insert stating, “Friends are not fukkin records”. Uh, right. The sleeve even has a “UKHC logo, just like the “NYHC” ones of American hardcore records, and a legend declaring, “if you do not get one [an insert], this EP is fukkin worthless”. Which is far too stationary a target. The best bit on 12 Inches Of A.Y.S., a mini-album, comes at the end of the final “tune”, where the “singer” shouts something like “Bear that in mind!” Not an easy task, because his lyrics are totally indecipherable, and that’s why it’s the closest this bunch get to being entertaining.
Although AYS, along with The Stupids, may lay claim to being one of the first Brit bands to bear an overt USHC influence, and were certainly one of the first to "go" straight edge, they weren't very good. And although they were great mates with Ian MacKaye and Colin from Conflict rated them highly, I think they should still be filed under "bin". I just don't get their appeal. And that singer Weeny was later revealed as a racist (in Ian Glasper's The Day The Country Died book) makes them even worse.
