Reviews & Opinions

CLIFF WHITE, SMASH HITS APRIL 5-18, 1979: Ironic that just when Jimmy Pursey and his mates decide to disband (will they, won't they?) they come out with one of their strongest ever records. Both 'Qs & As' and 'I Gotta Survive ' on the flip are good, forthright songs that typify Pursey's own character, and the band have seldom sounded fitter. If you've got to go, don't be away too long, Jimmy.

PUNKY GIBBON: After having broken up a few times, this was the first new outing from the newly-reformed Sham. Since the previous single 'Hurry Up Harry' Pursey had developed his "philosophical" lyrics and the band had acquired an uncredited fifth member, Tot Taylor, who played keyboards and piano on both sides of this record. 'Questions And Answers' was later re-recorded for The Adventures Of The Hersham Boys, but this single version is poppier and glossier. With that unmistakable voice and Parson's slashing rhythm guitar, it's still the Sham we know and love (or hate), but no wonder some felt they were going soft. The B-Side includes a standard issue Sham stormer ('I Gotta Survive') and a ludicrous, piss-take version of The Beatles' oldie, with drummer Dodie singing completely out of tune (on purpose, I hope).

Additional Notes

The "Made in France" version was, I believe, intended for the UK only, hence it's inclusion here.
