Reviews & Opinions

PUNKY GIBBON: 'Tell Us The Truth' couples a raucous live side with an under-produced studio set. The live side is superb, although it reinforces their rep as boot boys, with the crowd indulging in moronic Cockney sing-a-longs ('Knees Up Mother Brown' etc) and Pursey introducing 'We Got A Fight' as "a song about getting your head kicked in." Nonetheless, the anti-elitist 'Rip Off', the topical 'George Davis Is Innocent' and 'Borstal Breakout' are stirring. Although the studio side sounds like demos, it contains some of their most memorable proletariat rants, with only a few of the numbers hinting at later, preachier efforts. Closer 'Whose Generation' is an oddly ambiguous instrumental probably intended as a riposte to The 'Oo.

JIM GREEN/JACK RABID, TROUSER PRESS: The first LP sidesteps the issue of decent production by having one side with none at all and the other recorded live. The sound, oddly enough, isn't so much derived from the Clash and Pistols as it is from the Dolls, Heartbreakers and Ramones. (It's hard to judge how much of that is by design and how much is due to sheer incompetence.) More than any of those, Pursey's Cockney yelling tabbed him as the Anykid who could, but it's also true that almost any kid could have written the LP in his sleep.

ALL MUSIC GUIDE: 'Tell Us The Truth' sounds passionate, belligerent, and kinda dumb, but that's an improvement over Sham 69's later work, where the band sounds overblown, strident, and really, really dumb.
